8 Significant Trends in Photography Website Design

Blogging about photography we come across tons of photographer portfolios every day. Even though most photographers prefer to show their skills in photos actually, leaving experiments with website layouts to web designers, photography portfolio design doesn’t stand still and we observe many interesting approaches appearing.

In this post we overview 8 trends in photography portfolio design we observed and identified while analyzing personal websites of well-known professional photographers. Hopefully, it will inspire you for your own creative projects. By the way, if you have any suggestions falling into categories listed below or we missed any recent photo portfolio design technique, let us know in comments!

Latest Trends in Photography Website Design

First of all we would like to remark that a considerable part of websites we’ve analyzed is based on Flash. Flash photo websites provide richer visual experience to the user. Besides, modern Flash photography galleries are more dial-up friendly, easy navigated and accessible which is surely a positive trend.

Now let’s look closer at the other significant photography web design tendencies.

1. Spicing classical slideshow patterns

Such navigation effects as carousel or grid are probably the most common patterns in photography portfolios. They enable users to quickly skim through all available photos without digging the whole website over. Although simple slideshows are the most common work showcasing techniques, many photographers make them look unique by mixing effects and adding some featured elements to them.

Grid Gallery

Here are some examples of how a simple grid gallery can look stylish and unique.

7. More text

Naturally, photos are the main content filling on photography websites, but we noticed that more photographers now use verbal form along with visual to communicate with the visitors. Blogs, tutorials, comprehensive descriptions of photo categories and single shots became quite popular in photo portfolio design. The more text on the website, the better it is for SEO and profile building, probably these are the main reasons for this trend.

In conclusion we would like to admit that designing you personal photo portfolio you should be aware of the common techniques, latest trends and specific features of photography website design. Take advantage of your knowledge to make your website up to date and attractive.  At the same time, try to keep the guidelines of easy navigation and accessibility as the website itself isn’t the main subject of interest when it comes to photography gallery - your work shouldn’t be cluttered, it should capture the visitor’s attention straight away and be easy to access. Treat your website as a setting- its beauty should highlight the work but not eclipse it.

Great sites but why are most of them are flash. Why? I’m a photo nut myself, but I never understood why every little photo needs to be loaded using flash. Flash does not improve your photograph.

Flash doesn’t improve your photograph but it ads the effects to the photo presentation. It’s like the great book in the stylish cover and the cooler the cover is, the more attention and thus sales it might get

Flash is pretty but not needed. If your photos are good, then they’re good. I look at a lot of photographers web sites and all the flash gets really obnoxious. PLUS, in the age of mobile media, flash is useless.

During the day, I browse on my iPhone, I find a lot of great links via Twitter, friendfeed, etc., if they are in flash - I just move on to the next. By the time I get home they are long burried in the stream and in the ever increasing deluge, I just forget about the ones that did not display earlier that day. I don’t necessarily spend much time on non-flash sites on my iPhone - but I do bookmark the ones that make a good first impression.
